Education System Overview
In the 2015-2016 academic year, 583 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit in Norway.
Academic year: Mid-August – mid-June
Major school holidays/break:
- Fall break: usually around week 40 (K-12 only)
- Spring break: usually around week 8 (K-12 only)
- Mid-December – mid-January
Major exam period(s):
- Mid-November – Mid-December
- Mid-May – Mid-June
Ten years of English language classes are required for all Norwegian high school students.
Structure of the University System
Years of study required to earn a bachelor's degree: Norway introduced Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees, generally on a 3 + 2 + 3 year model, which replaced the old degrees at the end of 2003. It is important to note that parallel to the new degrees, the old undergraduate degrees were awarded until 2005, and the old graduate degrees were awarded until 2007.
