U.S. Department of Education

The DDRA program provides grants to U.S. universities, which distribute them to U.S. doctoral candidates engaging in full-time research abroad on foreign language and area studies.

U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs

Provides up to $5,000 to study or intern abroad to U.S. undergraduate students who are child dependents of active duty military members and who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Students can also receive up to an additional $3,000 to study one of 15 critical languages.

U.S. Department of Defense

Provides grants to U.S. universities to host domestic language programs for their students combined with overseas capstone programs to attain professional level proficiency in a critical language. U.S. students at Flagship hosting institutions can apply to join the Flagship Programs at their schools. Limited student support funding is available.

U.S. Department of Education

Provides grants to U.S. colleges and universities to establish and operate centers focused on language education and area studies. Students at selected institutions can take advantage of the courses and resources offered through these centers.

Provides full, merit-based scholarships for U.S. high school students to study one of eight critical languages overseas in intensive immersion summer and academic year programs, live with host families, and learn about the local culture.

U.S. Department of Defense

Provides specialized Boren funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to pursue an intensive domestic summer program followed by a one semester intensive immersion overseas program in languages critical to national security. *As with all Boren awards, requires one year of federal government service afterwards.*

National Security Agency

Offers U.S. K-12 students, undergraduates, and teachers of critical need foreign languages creative and engaging summer experiences that strive to exemplify best practices in language education and in language teacher development. These programs are administered by competitively selected U.S. colleges, universities, and non-profit organizations across the country.
